Sodium Hydroxide is a major ingredient in drain openers. It produces an exothermic reaction when mixed with water. Sodium hydroxide will go into the drain and convert any fats left in the drain to soap, which helps to dissolve in water. When sodium hydroxide is mixed with water, a great deal of heat is given off and this heat helps to melt the clog. If a large amount of the solid drain cleaner is added to a clogged drain, the heat produced can actually boil the water since it is such a strong alkali base. A strong alkali, like Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda), is the principal agent in most oven cleaning products. It works because of a chemical reaction between alkalis with oil and fat. Basically the fats and oils are converted into soap which can then be washed away with water with ease.
Lye is one of the oldest used paint strippers and can also dissolve glue and make wood soft. They work towards breaking down the chemicals in the paint by creating a very high pH-level when added. The lye (sodium hydroxide) reacts to the oily ingredients with the paint and starts breaking them down. Hardwoods should never be be stripped as it would turn the wood black and attract moisture.
In the most used process, the Kraft process, wood is treated with a solution containing a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide. Most of the unwanted material in the wood, such as the lignins, dissolve in the liquor, leaving relatively pure cellulose which is filtered off. It is this cellulose which after further purification forms the basis of paper.
