What You Should Do at the First Sign of Mold

Post By Hugo Iriarte

Mold and mildew aren’t just gross-looking; it’s dangerous.  Mold grows wherever there’s excessive moisture. Mold spores can fill the air, leading to eye irritation and respiratory issues for you and your family.

Mold removal is a challenge, but it’s not an impossible task. If you see mold in your home, here’s what you should do:

Determine your approach:

First things first: exactly how much mold do you see? Does it appear to be isolated to a certain area? If so, you could clean the mold yourself with bleach or another approved cleaning agent, but be careful. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you should:

  • Wear protective goggles and non-porous gloves
  • Ventilate the room by opening doors and windows
  • Use fans to move the air out of the room
  • Avoid mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaners

Not sure if the mold is isolated? It might be best to call a mold remediation company. Sometimes it’s better to let a professional take care of it.

Find out what caused the mold in the first place:

The next step is to determine the “why” behind the mold. Sometimes it’s easy to find the root cause; other times, it’s not as cut and dry. If you want to figure out where the mold is coming from, ask yourself:

    • Could your roof be leaking?
    • Are your vents clogged?
    • Is a pipe broken or leaking?
    • Did you completely clean up after last week’s flood?
    • Are you making use of your exhaust fans?

Mold can be prevented; you just need to listen to your home if a problem arises, and take care of moisture problems as soon as you’re aware of them. Keep mold out of your home for good by 1) repairing the roof and plumbing leaks, 2) removing soaked carpets and furniture, and 3) checking your home’s ventilation systems.

Check for mold in unordinary places:

So, you found mold in your bathroom or basement. Don’t stop the search there! Mold could also be growing on your roof, under your floorboards or around your windows. Make sure to check these unordinary areas for mold to make sure your home is healthy all-around.

If you’re selling your home, conduct a mold inspection to ensure you’re not putting a home on the market with a moisture problem. When visible mold is not present, but the smell of mold is, then it’s definitely a good idea to hire a mold inspection company to evaluate your problem.
