Effective Dust Control Solutions for a safer Community & Workplace

Post By Theodore Jones

Does the dust from your construction site spread into the air and cause a nuisance? Maybe dust is blowing from your property’s dirt road or from your horse arena. Either way, dust isn’t just a cleanliness problem; it can lead to other complications like reduced air quality and visibility.

Dust inhalation is also a big issue. Even a small amount of dust can cause severe issues for those with asthma and other respiratory problems. Continued inhalation can lead to respiratory illnesses, including scoliosis.

Here’s the good news: Numerous affordable solutions are available to control dust around homes, businesses, or worksites. Here are a few things you should know about dust and most importantly, how you can control it.

Why should you care about dust control?

Dust isn’t just a messy nuisance. It’s a hazard to your health and property. In addition to creating an untamable mess, dust:

  • Limits driver’s visibility
  • Causes property damage
  • Aggravates respiratory issues
  • Damages vehicles
  • Causes accidents on the road or at worksites
  • Leads to environmental pollution
  • Increases risk of fire
  • Increases cleaning costs

Remember: dust affects more than just you and your property. If you own a dirt or gravel driveway, the dust impacts your neighbors as well. Also, if you manage a construction site or a dusty work environment like a horse arena, you’re putting your employees and guests at risk when you fail to control the dust.

By implementing a plan for dust control, you’re making a conscious effort to protect the safety and health of those around you.

Who should invest in dust control?

From small home improvement projects to large industrial worksites, any project that produces dust needs a dust control solution. Here is a small list of projects and industries that are known for producing dust:

  • Steel mills
  • Horse tracks
  • Fairgrounds
  • Mines
  • Farms
  • Quarries
  • Shipping terminals

Remember, if your project is producing dust, it’s essential to find ways to reduce the sheer amount of dust in the air.

How can I control dust?

Depending on what is producing the dust, there are different solutions.

Roads and driveways

For dirt roads and gravel driveways, liquid-based dust suppressants are a great option.  These specialty emulsion mixtures are sprayed on the road’s surface to break down tiny mineral-based elements and harden them so they can’t become airborne.

Calcium chloride pellets are also an option to tame dusty roads and unpaved driveways. Just wet the surface before scattering the pellets overtop your road or driveway.

For best results, apply the dust suppressant after traffic has subsided, such as in the early morning or evening.

For large worksites, calcium chloride pellets are the best option. They can either be scattered directly on the ground or diluted in water to form a liquid mixture you can spray around your site. Use caution when creating a liquid mixture from pellets as the mixture will get hot.

One treatment can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months, so you can continue to improve your home or grow your business.

    Are dust control solutions safe?

Absolutely. Calcium chloride has been used for over 100 years. Calcium chloride is 100% non-toxic, so you can use it around other people and animals without concern. Just remember to wear protective masks and goggles while applying as the solution can irritate the skin.

Additionally, calcium chloride won’t contaminate soil or affect water supplies.

Is dust control worth the expense?

A little money spent on dust prevention can save you time and money in the future. Just 55 gallons of a liquid solution or approximately 100 pails of calcium chloride pellets can treat an area the size of a football field! With a few pails of calcium chloride, you can:

    • Reduce workplace injuries and expensive workers’ compensation claims
    • Protect the air quality around your home, business, or worksite
    • Reduce repair costs of your capital investments
    • Reduce vehicle and property damage

We think that’s worth the investment. If you are searching for a solution, browse our selection of dust control products by clicking here.
